The New Americans Museum will be exhibiting “Through My Father's Eyes: The Filipino American Photographs of Ricardo Ocreto Alvarado (1914-1976)” from September 20th to November 2nd, 2008.
This vibrant photo-exhibit celebrates Filipino-American community life in postwar America. It is the first significant exhibition about Filipinos in America to be associated with any of the Smithsonian's museums.
It showcases that the American of Filipino Heritage is truly a Noble Spirit (Diwang Maharlika) fully participating in creating the future and pursuing America's dream of equality and justice, in terms of treatment and opportunities, to enjoy the inalienable rights to life, liberty and pursuit of happiness.
It points to the fact that Filipinos in America are an important part of history and bring richness to the fabric of stories and cultures that make America unique and great.
This moving exhibition has an emotional impact that resonates among Americans of Filipino heritage and the greater community as well. In the words of curator Janet Alvarado, her father's photographs tell, “colorful stories filled with vivid images of a vibrant community and a multicultural past.”
